The estate includes a Palladian mansion, the village of Stourton, gardens, farmland, and woodland and is now owned by the National Trust. The gardens were designed by Henry Hoare II and laid out between 1741 and 1780 in a classical 18th-century design set around a large lake, achieved by damming a small stream. The inspiration behind their creation were the painters Claude, Poussin and, in particular, Gaspar Dughet, who painted Utopian-type views of Italian landscapes. | Rockbourne Roman Villa is located near Fordingbridge in a picturesque and peaceful part of Hampshire close to the New Forest. The villa once stood in the centre of a large farming estate, and is the largest known Roman villa in the area. It's history spans the period from the Iron Age through to the 5th century AD. Today you can walk around the remains of the villa and visit the site museum which displays many of the fascinating objects found on the site and shows what life was like for the Roman Britons who lived here over 1600 years ago. Visitors can see the best mosaics, part of the under floor heating system and the outline of the Villa's forty rooms. | One of England's most romantic castles located near Tisbury, in a secluded lakeside setting. Built in the late 14th century for John, fifth Lord Lovel, this unusual six-sided castle was unique in medieval English architecture. Not only was it a secure house, it was also a luxurious residence, with multiple rooms for guests. Badly damaged in the English Civil War, it was restored to the Arundell family who continued to maintain it as a ruin when they built New Wardour nearby in 1776. Its setting makes it one of England's most romantic ruins. | ||||||||||||||||||||
